Written by Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland and Eddie Holland, the single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 the next month.
It was released by African-American-owned Motown Records, which produced dozens of number one hits from African American artists in the 1960s and 1970s. #SmithsonianMusic
