Painter and printmaker Carmen Lomas Garza is an icon of the Chicano art movement. Her folk-styled works document the lives of Mexican Americans and often portray memories of her own family in South Texas.
Lomas Garza did not have access to art lessons as a child, so she went to the library and checked out and read every book she could about art.
The Chicano movement of the 1960s and 1970s helped give her new pride in her mixed Native American and Spanish ancestry. She developed an accessible style of painting that celebrates the family memories, community identity and everyday life of Mexican Americans, hoping that by painting positive Mexican American activities, her art might help eliminate the racism she experienced as a child.
Lomas Garza has created multiple bilingual children's books, and many of her artworks are in the collection of our @americanart.
