Margaret Hamilton was responsible for software that put astronauts into space and got them safely back home again.
In a male-dominated field, she became known as the “Rope Mother”—referring to the way computer programs involved a series of wires threaded with computer memory storage to form "core ropes."
It was precise work, and it required documenting every decision and every line of code with a full explanation of what it did and how its actions affected the rest of the program.
Hamilton is photographed here standing next to listings of the Apollo Guidance Computer source code. Some of the program listings shown are in Hamilton's papers at our @airandspacemuseum.
