Snake-necked turtles like this one photographed at Turtles Australia can grow to be 11 inches long with its neck growing to be more than half the length of its shell! These turtles spend most of their time on the bottom of bodies of water. When conditions get too dry, this species will burrow into fallen leaves on the forest floor and go into a long state of dormancy until rains return. The largest threat to Australian snake-necked turtles is the introduction of the nonnative red fox, which preys on nests sites, destroying many of the turtle's eggs, but they are also impacted by habitat loss and changes in water usage. Human development obstructs the movement of these turtles, which travel long distances during breeding season, and changes in human water consumption can make previously inhabited bodies of water unsuitable. Reducing how much water you use by turning off the tap or taking shorter showers can help to protect the home of this unique turtle and other aquatic species as well!
