Believe it or not, it’s National Aardvark Week! Aardvarks live throughout Africa, south of the Sahara Desert. Their name comes from South Africa's Afrikaans language and means “earth pig,” but if you look closely you’ll see that the aardvark appears to borrow features from many different animals! Aardvarks are nocturnal, spending the day holed up in cool underground burrows then emerging after sunset to acquire their favorite food—termites. Habitat loss threatens this species throughout the African continent, but also hunting for bushmeat is an increasing threat to Aardvark populations in some countries. Parts of the animal that aren't eaten are used to make items like bracelets and charms - a reminder to all of us to be informed consumers when making purchases at home and abroad so that we don’t buy wildlife products!
