The Guira cuckoo from South America is an extremely social species that can often be seen in flocks of six to eight birds - a number that can grow to 20 after breeding season ends! This species breeds communally, meaning that several females will lay their eggs in the same nest. With so many parents trying to attend to their eggs, competition can be fierce and often only a quarter of the eggs will hatch successfully. This doesn't seem to be a problem for the birds though, who are the most common cuckoo found throughout areas ranging from the mouth of the Amazon River to central Argentina. The species also appears to be unaffected by habitat degradation and has a population that scientists believe is steadily increasing.
