Did you know giraffes used to greet visitors to the Museum?🦒 Natural history specimens were a large part of the Museum’s early collection – in 1834, out of the 942 species of mammal then known, 330 were represented in the Museum.

Three giraffes and a rhinoceros stood at the top of the staircase of Montagu House – the building that originally housed the collection from the mid-18th century. This 1845 watercolour by George Scharf shows the specimens on display.
