These photos were taken in the Museum by Frederick York in 1875. The first shows two giant deer, whose antlers could grow almost twice as wide as their height. Natural history specimens were once part of the Museum’s collection, including long-extinct animals.

The skeleton on the right in the second photo is a mastodon – an early relative of the elephant that became extinct around 10,000 years ago.

By the mid-19th century the Museum’s natural history collection had grown too large to house in one institution. In the 1880s all the zoological specimens were moved to a new home – now the @natural_history_museum It took 394 trips by horse and cart to transport them all!
