Its silver mount takes the form of a sea monster with gaping jaws. On its back an infant Hercules rides the monster while holding a serpent in his left hand. It is uncertain exactly where this incredible object was made. The carvings of fighting dragons on the shell were possibly added in Guangzhou, China. The silver work might have been made in Italy – combining lustrous shells with an eagle’s claw was popular in Padua and Venice at this time.
