Buckingham House (now Buckingham Palace) was considered, but dismissed as too expensive! The building that was chosen, Montagu House, was a beautiful French-style mansion, surrounded by gardens and paddocks. This 1827 watercolour by George Scharf depicts visitors inside the building.
