A meadow is so much more than just an open field! Meadows are diverse, dynamic habitats that provide food, cover, and nesting sites for birds, and insects and other wildlife.
They are also important to us humans, purifying the air through photosynthesis and breaking up dense soil with deep roots, which helps absorb storm water runoff to prevent flooding and erosion.
Despite their importance, meadow habitats have been on the steady decline over the past century due to urban and agricultural development. How can we help restore them? Planting native wildflowers to support pollinators, replacing lawn with meadow plants, and leaving grasses up through the winter to avoid disturbing insects and other hibernating wildlife.
