They’re called foundation species and include beavers, kelp and coral, which is the focus of our “Foundations of the Sea” exhibit.⁣ ⁣ Coral reefs are some of the oldest, and most diverse ecosystems on the planet and are aptly nicknamed “the rainforests of the sea.” Reefs fulfill important roles, providing homes for a quarter of all marine life and even provide humans with protecting through buffering damaging storms and tsunamis.⁣ ⁣ Coral reefs are in danger. Climate change, pollution and overfishing are causing a massive die-off of corals, which also negatively affects organisms beyond the reef habitat.
