They’re called foundation species and include beavers, kelp and coral, which is the focus of our “Foundations of the Sea” exhibit.⁣ ⁣ Coral reefs are some of the oldest, and most diverse ecosystems on the planet and are aptly nicknamed “the rainforests of the sea.” Reefs fulfill important roles, providing homes for a quarter of all marine life and even provide humans with protecting through buffering damaging storms and tsunamis.⁣ ⁣ Coral reefs are in danger. Climate change, pollution and overfishing are causing a massive die-off of corals, which also negatively affects organisms beyond the reef habitat. You can help support reefs by consuming sustainable seafood, participating in beach and reef cleanups, and reducing your carbon footprint.⁣ ⁣ We hope you enjoyed learning about a few of the 14 exhibits that make up “Habitat” and can experience them in person soon!
