Meet the black crested mangabey photographed @chattanoogazoo. Known for their long whiskers and pointy hairdo, adult male mangabeys are also the kings of what researchers call the “whoop-gobble”. This is a unique call used by these monkeys - the whoop gets the attention of other mangabeys in the area, and the gobble tells everyone who and where he is. Mangabeys spend a lot of their time moving from tree to tree in search of flowers that provide a sweet nectar treat. This feeding behavior makes them important forest residents, earning them the status of pollinators and seed dispersers, responsible for maintaining the health of the ecosystem. Unfortunately, these monkeys are among the first residents to disappear from forests close to human settlements, and because mangabeys are such fruit lovers, they tend to raid fruit plantations and are often seen as pests.
