Young girls imitate the Nyau with shuffled movements forward, arms and hips swinging energetically side to side. The Nyau make a dramatic lunge and the children quickly retreat, thrilled by the intimidation but mindful to maintain distance. On the opposite side, men keenly watch the fast footwork as if they too, know the steps to follow. The Nyau are not seen as human - masked dancers possessed by the spirits of animals and those long dead which are represented in the carved masks. Having existed for centuries, they can still be found operating predominately within villages, public dances often held after the initiation of young boys into manhood all the while maintaining the mysticism and tradition of their secret society.
