Thank you HIPA.AE for the honor of receiving this most prestigious international award. I am deeply grateful and happy to be recognized for my life’s work, especially during these tragic and tumultuous times. With all the horrific visuals we were bombarded with over this past weekend, I almost missed the official announcement. However, I can’t help but note that it is the power of photography – often a single stark image -- that allows us to bear witness to injustice and effect change. As a minority photographer myself, I am all the more conscious of our role in showing the world our common humanity. It is my hope that my pictures, by helping to further the understanding of other races and cultures, can encourage tolerance and movement toward positive action. I am proud to be honored by an organization whose goal is to “promote the welfare and well-being of a nobler world.” To use the often repeated COVID pandemic slogan, we are all in this together!
