I lost a lot of people on my other accounts over the last few weeks, but oddly enough, I got a tiny bump in followers over here, so... I’m going to do that thing where I introduce myself. Hi! I’m Ilana. A born and bred New Yorker and full time blogger/content creator. I used to work as a creative director in advertising, got laid off right after my maternity leave and then started a blog called Mommy Shorts while I was looking for my next job. That was ten years ago. Now I have a 10yo named Mazzy, a 7yo named Harlow and a brand new puppy named Frankie. I’ve also got a husband named Mike who takes terrible photos except on rare occasions, like when he snapped this one. That blog I started while looking for a job became THE JOB. Funny how things work. Right now, I run this account, a community account called @mommyshortssquad, and a meme account called @Average Parent Problems. Putting yourself out there online is a strange thing on a normal day, but feels particularly strange right now when so many of us are doing a lot of internal soul searching. One thing I’ve realized since I started watching and reading and following things to help me better understand systemic racism and white privilege is that doing this work doesn’t make you feel better. It makes you feel profoundly worse. I’m not going to stop though. So please know that even when I’m posting regular mom stuff (it’s the last week of school!), Frankie stuff (her first bath!) and brand campaigns (hello, Funfetti!), I’m not done educating myself, speaking up, or amplifying Black voices. Instagram just also happens to be how I make a living. Someone said yesterday that this is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. It’s lifelong work. So please know that just because I post other stuff, I haven’t moved on. I am in it for the marathon.
