The ancient salt terraces of Yanjin, Tibet, along Route 318 of the Tea Horse Road, cling to sheer slopes on both banks of the Mekong River. Salty water is pumped up from wells under the riverbed to fill the 3,000 multi level wooden platforms covered in local red clay. It takes 2 weeks of wind and sunshine to evaporate the brine leaving layers of crystallized white salt. In operation for some 1200 years, this is the only place in the world where river brine is processed in this unique way. #salt #saltpans #teahorseroad #chamagudao #tibet #tibetan #mekong #lancangjiang
