I am embarrassed to admit that I had never heard about Juneteenth until these last few weeks. Thank you to @iamasadugger for explaining the meaning behind the holiday so succinctly. I wanted to add a few ways white people can celebrate: 1) Amplify Black voices on social media. A few accounts that have been invaluable to me in the parenting space are @theconsciouskid and @readlikearockstar. 2) Buy from Black owned businesses. Two children’s stores you can buy from are @kidochicago and @braveandkindbooks. 3) Donate to organizations that are fighting for civil liberties like the NAACP or the ACLU. 4) Reflect on your own privilege and educate yourself on the issues of systemic racism and implicit bias. I highly recommend watching the documentary 13th on Netflix and listening to the 1619 podcast from the NY Times. 5) Think about how you will work to do these things going forward. Not just today.
