Video by @Joel Sartore I Hawaiian monk seals are named for the folds of skin that somewhat resemble a monk's cowl. In Hawaii, the seal is better known as `Ilio holo I ka uaua, which means “dog that runs in rough water.” Like other species of warm-water monk seals, this species is at risk of extinction due to human encroachment on habitat and a high risk of being caught by fisheries as accidental bycatch. Sharks also prey on these seals, and males sometimes kill females of their own species in group attacks called mobbing. Video taken @mnzoo under the authority of NMFS MMPA/ESA Permit No. 17967-01.
