When the financial crisis happened in 2008, O’Galdez had been working as a consultant at Bank of America in Boston and lost her job. Rather than losing hope, she saw an opportunity to escape the traditional 9 to 5 life and pursue her passion in cooking and it wasn’t long before Gourmet Diva was born. O’Galdez has spent the last nine years working in the food industry as everything from a pastry chef to a freelance caterer for some of New York’s most prestigious companies. Now that Covid has disrupted the food industry as we know it, O’Galdez has shifted once again. “I had to put on hold the majority of services I offered… I had to reinvent and figure out how I can still be connected and entertain people in a safe manner.” Her solution: to build a company that offers both education and entertainment around food. As a born and raised New Yorker, O’Galdez believes the city has shaped her to become the resilient person she is today. “There is an intensity and drive that we have that you don’t get anywhere else” O’Galdez explains. As for the future, she remains hopeful, buoyed by the outpouring of support the city has shown for small businesses like hers.
