Because of coronavirus, none of the huts on Mount Fuji open this year, and the roads that take climbers up to the trailheads have been blocked off to cars and buses. To get to the start of the trailhead, staff writer Oscar Boyd (@oscar.boyd) cycled from the coast to Fujinomiya 5th Station (2,400 meters), carrying all the water, food and clothing necessary knowing there’d be no support or backup otherwise. From the coast it took around 16 hours roundtrip to Fuji’s 3,776-meter peak, cycling overnight to climb through sunrise. The tough climb is not for everyone, but can be worth it for the sunrise and view of Japan. 📸 Oscar Boyd
