#ArtWords: Brücke was a German expressionist group founded in Dresden in 1905. The group developed a radical style characterised by extreme emotion expressed through vivid, non-naturalistic colours. Brücke translates to bridge in German and may have been intended to convey the idea of a bridge between the artist and society at large. The Brücke Museum in Berlin (opened in 1967) was named after the group.
This oil painting is one of many portraits of Rosa Schapire by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Trained as an art historian, she was one of the first supporters of the Brücke group of which Schmidt-Rottluff was one of the founders. The portrait was painted during the summer of 1919 at Hohwacht on Germany's Baltic Sea coastline, and was given to Schapire as a Christmas present later the same year by the artist and his wife.
