Mount Yatsugatake is a popular hiking area in the spring, summer and fall — and an acclaimed ice climbing destination in winter. With peaks between 2,000 and 2,900 meters tall, and temperatures between 2 and minus 10 degrees Celsius between December and February, it doesn’t get quite as much snowfall as the mountains to the west. This helps Yatsugatake’s waterfalls freeze to a consistently safe temperature without becoming buried in deep snow.

Its climbs are easier to navigate and carry reduced risk of avalanche compared to other locations, all of which has helped Yatsugatake become something of a tourist attraction among adventurous (and warm-blooded) travelers.
