In total, 440 volcanoes dot the Japanese archipelago. Of these, 111 are classified as currently active. The specific mechanisms of local geology meant that only 12 of these volcanoes developed into calderas — the concave landform left behind when a subterranean magma chamber empties, causing the ground above to collapse.
