Japan’s annual haul of saury — sanma in Japanese — has plunged in recent years, pushing up prices and leading to concerns that the days of enjoying this fatty, tasty and cheap fish — a fall delicacy and source of myriad cultural and culinary references — may be coming to an end.

Before the pandemic, for example, the saury festival in Meguro typically offered around 5,000 free fish to over 30,000 visitors on a first-come, first-served basis. This year, only 2,000 could be sourced from the port of Kesennuma, a city in Miyagi Prefecture long known for its plentiful saury stocks.

A confluence of factors are behind the prized fish’s depleted catch, including overfishing in international waters and changing ocean conditions. However, experts remain somewhat unsure as to why the savory fish has suddenly become so rare in Japanese seas.
