For years the forest has been a place of solitude and mystery, where treasures are awarded to those who are patient and get lost under its canopy. For me, these treasures were in the form of a great grey owl family. A friend who had stumbled upon them by pure chance helped show me the way to their hideout. As we bush-whacked our way through the dense growth, we finally came upon the mother owl who was perched atop a tree stump hunting. After a few minutes she caught a vole right beneath her and flew it over to the chicks who gobbled it up. We stayed with the family for nearly 3 hours as we peacefully watched the chicks squawk and chatter. As the mother flew around the chicks bounced around, there were times we found ourselves less then a foot away from their razor sharp talons. The great grey owls are known for being very calm around humans and tend to not even glance in our direction. I was able to get about 10 feet off the ground and shoot these two chicks with a wide angle lens to show them in their forest habitat. I've dreamed of getting a shot like this for years and yesterday was an experience I soon won't forget. #owl #nature #jacksonhole #yellowstone #wyoming #birds #tetons #babyanimals
