The other day, I finally found something that has been eluding me for weeks now, an owl chick. Well actually, I've found four now, but one was sufficient to satisfy my tireless hunt for the little guys! As you may have seen, I've posted quite a few photos recently of great grey owls, but this is a great horned owl chick. In this particular fir tree, the mother owl was perched upon a branch above her two chicks who were fascinated with my presence. What cracks me up about them is they are so small and look like balls of fluff, but they have this intense glare that doesn't seem to fit with the rest of their body. As I stood beneath the tree, this owl chick just stared and stared until he eventually feel asleep. Due to the warmer weather this year and the accelerated growing season, these owls hatched earlier than normal and should be fully fledged in about 2-3 weeks or so.
