For years, Horace Poolaw photographed his community in rural Oklahoma—a rare insider’s view of American Indian life taken by an American Indian—but most of his work stayed as negatives until after his death.
Poolaw’s images span five decades and capture his friends and family at a time in the mid-20th century when few others were documenting the changing culture. This photo is of his son, sporting a Navy uniform as well as a feather headdress.
Now many of his photos are on view in a new exhibition at our @smithsoniannmai through June 2017.
