"Setsubun," literally meaning "season time," is a celebration of the coming spring. Traditionally, on "Setsubun no Hi," held annually on Feb. 3, people throw beans to ward off bad spirits. The dried beans are also eaten bring good luck. On Friday, at Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto, apprentice geisha, known as "maiko," threw beans at a Setsubun no Hi ceremony.
