On Friday, at Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto, apprentice geisha known as "maiko," threw beans at a ceremony to celebrate Setsubun no Hi. At shrines in Tokyo, sumo wrestlers and celebrities were chosen to throw out the lucky beans at Setsubun events. While throwing the beans, people traditionally shout “Fuku wa uchi! Oni wa soto” (“Fortune in! Bad spirits out!”) in a prayer for happiness and health throughout the year.
