FOB IT UP.

Back in the day I would hear on the news that a group of fellow Chinese people from my home town has shown up on the ports in Vancouver. 偷渡 ”toudu" was the term for illegal crossing. I know now it was under the harshest circumstances how they came across, but at the time I remember can't help but feeling glad that more of us made it here.

Fresh Off the Boat, FOB, has always held a special meaning to me.

Obviously a lot of people still use this term to make fun. "That dudes so Fobby he's eating frenchfries with chopsticks." But you know what an amazing feat it is to cross the Pacific in a cargo container or in the bowels of a ship or eat frenchfries with chopsticks? Tragedies still occur today with refugees trying to cross oceans to escape persecution.

Many Chinese people came to the West Coast this way in the 19th century hoping to etch out a new life following the lure of the gold rush in the land of freedom. Many didn't survive the journey so those who made it Fresh Off the Boat should wear it like a badge of honor! FOB to them probably meant something more like Future'll Only be Better.

Today, we are better off. Asia is thriving and Asians are killing it. So go ahead, call me a FOB, to me it just means the Fun's Only Begun.
