While climbing has brought to me many good and memorable moments, it has also presented pain in various ways as well as loss.
From a young age, I would befriend employees of the gym, who would inevitably move away. These were my first feeling of loss within climbing. My community wasn’t what most are today when kids start climbing. I lived an hour away from the gym and nobody at my school or in my town climbed or knew about it. So my friends at the gym were precious to me.
As time keeps ticking away, things change, people change. Distance doesn’t make or break a friendship, so I’ve learned since being 12, however there are many people I’ve befriended over the years that aren’t a ‘friend’ anymore. And that’s painful. And I’m very sensitive to it.
The biggest source of pain is when we lose someone, forever, because of climbing or the pursuits we love.
But the only thing to do with either situation is to keep on living. Keeping the flame ignited for those we’ve lost, whether it’s to continue a dream of a friend who can no longer, or simply smile and wave to those in passing who might not be on the same page as ourselves. Pass on the love, always. #savvystrong #theworldneedsmorelove
