Photo by @salvarezphoto | An Anna’s eighty-eighty butterfly (Diaethria anna) sits on the end of my finger in the cloud forest near Mindo, Ecuador. These small, graphically decorated butterflies can be found throughout the wet tropical forests of middle America. As caterpillars they feed on plants. As adults they drink the nectar from flowers. This one is likely using its long proboscis to taste the salts and other amino acids on my finger. It found whatever was there so interesting that it was reluctant to leave.
This is one of the cases where a camera phone was the best tool for the job. With one hand occupied holding the butterfly there was no way I could focus and compose with a big dslr.
