The Crab Nebula is the result of a bright supernova explosion that was seen on Earth in 1054 by astronomers in China, Japan and the Middle East. The center of this nebula contains a super-dense neutron star roughly 12 miles in diameter that rotates 30 times per second!
The neutron star shoots out lighthouse-like beams of light from radio waves to gamma-rays as it spins, which makes it a pulsar.
