At a time when labor organizing was dominated by men, Dolores Huerta was an architect of the 1960s and 1970s farm workers' movement.
The Latina leader —shown in this 1966 George Ballis photo from @smithsoniannpg—co-founded what became the United Farm Workers (UFW) with César Chávez. Working with an ethnically and culturally diverse group of farm workers, she helped conceive, plan and manage the grape strike and boycott that started in 1965 and lasted five years.
Huerta was instrumental in achieving major legal protections and a better standard of living for farm workers.
Today we announced that our @slc_latino's first gallery space, the Molina Family Latino Gallery, will open in 2021 at @国立アメリカ歴史博物館. The planned inaugural exhibition, “Making Home: Latino Stories of Community and Belonging,” will examine the historical roots of Latino culture as it shaped the continent and the U.S., because Latino history is American history.
