Our @smithsoniangardens grows 21 different varieties of poinsettias at their greenhouses, with names such as "Prestige Red," "Christmas Wish Pink" and "Viking Cinnamon." This year that included 4,611 total cuttings across 1,962 pots.
Fun fact: Joel Poinsett, the namesake for the poinsettia, has a Smithsonian connection.
Poinsett was a botanist and statesman who introduced the poinsettia to the U.S. He was also a founding member of a national science organization and while many were debating what to do with the money James Smithson left for a vague purpose in America, he was the first person to argue that it should be used to create a national museum.
