Frances Benjamin Johnston studied painting and drawing, but when she discovered the camera in the 1880s, she was determined to be America’s first female photojournalist.
She trained under the Smithsonian's first photographer, Thomas Smillie, which led to her photographing the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago.
By 1895, Johnston had her own photography studio, the only woman to have one at the time in Washington, D.C. She photographed five U.S. presidents—including the last photo of President McKinley before his assassination—plus diplomats and other government officials.
Johnston's work appeared in publications such as The Ladies' Home Journal, Harper's Weekly and Cosmopolitan.
In her later years, she became well known for her architectural photography, capturing houses, barns and other buildings that intentionally showed everyday life in the South.
