She protested alongside the "Silent Sentinels" who picketed the White House, and pressed white suffragists to support African American women's right to vote. The first African American woman in the U.S. to serve on a Board of Education, Terrell was also the founding president of the National Association of Colored Women. At age 86, Terrell sat at a segregated lunch counter in Washington, D.C. When the establishment refused to serve her, she took them to court. Terrell was setting up a test case that eventually went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. The decision ended segregation in all Washington, D.C., establishments. She spent her 90th birthday testing the city's segregated theater policy. Terrell, who started her career as a high school teacher, lived to see Brown v.
