This ornate object is a ‘chatelaine’ – a decorative belt hook worn by women, which held small useful accessories like scissors, tweezers, thimbles, watches and keys. They would often be used to show the status of a woman in a household.

Suspended from this beautiful example are a watch and watch-key. The small box on the left is a writing case containing tiny ivory writing tablets. Made in Paris in the 1770s, it’s around 18 centimetres long and decorated with symbols of love, including Cupid, doves and a flaming heart.
