Feeling a bit crushed after the holidays? In “Still Life with Spirit and Xitle” (2007), Jimmie Durham pairs a 9-ton boulder from the archaeological site of the destructive Mexican volcano Xitle (or "spirit") with a 1992 Chrysler Spirit.
The piece seems impulsive and irreverent (see the cartoon-like face graffitied on the stone), but it's also about the moment when ancient and modern spirits collide. Smiling at you in all weather on our @hirshhorn's plaza, it's part performance, part sculpture. #atHirshhorn
