Photo by @Thomas Peschak | Atlantic puffins are social and nest in colonies, where many pairs are in close proximity. Aggressive encounters in a puffin colony are not unusual, and often begin with displays of gaping—the wider the beak is open, the more upset the puffin. In this case, the bright color of the inside of the mouth and the wrinkled rosettes of swollen skin clearly show this puffin’s displeasure with another bird coming too close to its burrow entrance.
