Photo by Keith Ladzinski @Keith Ladzinski | Meet Jabulani, an orphaned elephant that inspired a movement. In 1997, at an age of mere months, Jabulani was found in a silt mud pit into which he had slipped. The herd, unable to rescue him, had no choice but to abandon him. He was luckily discovered, rescued, and moved to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center, where he was nursed back to health and began to flourish. When Jabulani was three, the center began the long process of trying to assimilate him back into the wild among other elephants. Over time it became clear that Jabulani was not interested and was happier at the rescue center, which was quite a burden for an elephant of this size. In 2002, 12 orphaned elephants, trained for elephant-back safaris in nearby Zimbabwe, were facing culling. The 12 were rescued and brought to Hoedspruit, where Jabulani immediately took to the herd of outcasts. It was the beginning of Camp Jabulani—a lodge where these elephants now roam, and a place for discerning travelers from around the world. Here, the elephants are happy, loved, and well cared for on a vast landscape—with a sensibility of knowing that an elephant's place is in the wild.
