In 1990 I was following Jane Goodall on my second assignment for National Geographic. It was the continuation of a project I had started with her, as a co-conspirator, called Brutal Kinship. This image came together with one roll of film and no talking—just watching. Earlier in the shoot, I had started with a wider view. There was even a boy in the frame, and a stick that Jane and JoJo were sparring with. I was moving closer and zooming in at the same time. Then the photograph came together. I shot the last third of the roll with this scene. The moments leading to this one had the gestures of both Goodall and the captive chimpanzee.
