Wishing you a moment today as peaceful as this photograph of painter Maria Oakey Dewing reading.
Born in 1845, Dewing studied at the Cooper Union School of Design for Women and the National Academy of Design, and later wrote about painting for a national magazine. Her husband Thomas Wilmer Dewing was also a painter, and the pair spent summers from 1885 to 1905 at an artists’ colony in Cornish, New Hampshire. There they cultivated the large garden that she studied and painted.
