“Meronpan,” literally “melon bread,” but more commonly transliterated as “melonpan,” this bakery item is a national favorite. It’s got a crunchy top and a sweet, brioche-like interior. Named after its muskmelon-esque crackled surface, melonpan is sometimes green and melon-flavored, and sometimes filled with melon cream. In Kobe, it is shaped like a rugby ball and filled with shiroan (white bean paste), while “sanraisu” (“sunrise”) is what the average Japanese consumer typically call the treat. In Tokyo there are a wide range of contenders for the tastiest, most famous melonpan in town. Click on our link in the bio to read about the best five in the city. 📸 Russell Thomas (@rruussell)
