August was an experiment.

I found myself in the position to compete in different competitive spaces for 5 weekends, back to back. Beach volleyball, obstacle proficiency, endurance, strength, and more would all be required.

The competition lineup:
1. The Manhattan Beach 6man (beach volleyball, six players).
1st place finish with team @sohosixer 🥇
2. Grit Games in Texas (obstacles & endurance).
2nd place finish🥈
3. The Manhattan Beach AVP (beach volleyball, doubles).
1st place losers 🥇😉
4. Deka Fit Pennsylvania (a race where you run 5k and complete functional fitness station work).
13th in the world, qualified for world championships ✔️
5. The Motherlode in Aspen, CO (beach volleyball, doubles).
3rd place finish🥉

I felt like I would be wasting priceless opportunities if I turned any of them down. So, I said f*ck it. I’ll do them all. And see what happens.
Here’s what I learned.

• The fight is in the dog. Doesn’t matter the arena or the opponent. There’s talent, there’s preparation, and then there’s heart.
• Chapters of focus equal freedom. I found myself here because of time served in different spaces.
• Fitness is fitness. Sports are largely skill based, but fitness is pretty pure when it comes to performance. Either you have it or you don’t. Breathe, get your mind right, trust your preparation, and go.
• I wish I could tell you that the sting of losing lessens over the years, but unfortunately it hurts the same. Every time. We just get better at dealing with it. Perspective is everything.
• There’s more variables and factors in team sports, which is why it feels electric when it all aligns. But when it doesn’t, we’re left probing for answers with ands, buts, maybes, and what ifs.. trying to solve it all can drive you a little mad, but it also keeps us coming back for more. The possibility left hanging in the air is tantalizing.
• There are 3 boxes I like to check after a comp. Did I prepare to the best of my ability? Yes. Did I show up fully? Yes. Did I learn from my experiences? Yes. Then I should be proud.
• The pain of losing sucks, but the regret of never playing will always be worse.
