ISD has its origins in the Criminal Intelligence Department of the colonial police service in 1918, before being renamed Special Branch in 1933. The @singaporepoliceforce took over responsibility for the department in 1948. In 1966, after separation from Malaysia, it was renamed the Internal Security Department. Operating in the half-shadows, ISD has dealt with a range of threats over the years – from the communist threat in the 1950s to 80s, to more recent threats such as the Jemaah Islamiyah and ISIS militant groups, and now foreign influence operations and AI-generated deep-fakes. Just as these threats have evolved, so has the ISD in dealing with these security issues.
