To use a block or to not use a block is a similar question as do I place my hand on the inside of the foot or the outside? This is one of those times where everyone should have a different shape to there pose depending on how open there hip is. I would advise that in this case it is best to do what is comfortable. Your body will tell you when it is ready for you to take your hand on the outside or off of a block. In either case you will have a hip opener and you want to place the hand in a position that adds to the opening of the pose not further congesting the pose.
