“Keeper Sara Colandrea is conducting ground-breaking work on Andean bear reproductive behavior and physiology in conjunction with the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute endocrine lab. Female Andean bears experience delayed implantation (when a fertilized egg doesn’t immediately attach to the uterine wall). This species breeds in the spring and gives birth in the fall, but gestation is about 60 days. By collecting and analyzing fecal samples, Sara and the endocrine lab are hoping to find clues as to what triggers the egg to attach. Earlier this year, Sara traveled to Peru to share her husbandry, breeding and training expertise with colleagues at Inkaterra Association, adding international collaboration to her long list of accomplishments.”– Craig Saffoe, curator of Andean Bears #NZKW2017 Photo courtesy of Michael Tweddle @fonznationalzoo
