Keepers at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute are hand-raising this critically endangered dama gazelle calf after his mother did not survive his difficult birth July 4. They immediately moved him to the veterinary hospital and began bottle-feeding him. They plan to reintroduce him to the dama gazelle herd in a few weeks, which will allow him to learn species-appropriate behavior from other dama gazelles and understand the social dynamics of living in a herd. When he has been reintegrated with the herd, keepers will train him to come to them for bottle feedings using a clicker. #WeSaveSpecies
